Lamb Muzzles...Do I need One?
Lamb muzzles are a great thing to have on hand for show day and at the barn. A muzzle is used for a variety of different reasons. The main one is to stop an animal from eating, but they can also be used to stop animals from biting each other. Muzzles help keep an animal safe by not allowing them to eat things that might be harmful for them, such as shavings. If you are going to put your lamb on shavings, you will want to make sure they have a muzzle on.
There are several different types of muzzles from canvas to plastic and which one you will want will depend on your needs. We have both in our showbox because some work better for specific animals. When we had lambs that would bite each other, they would often pull the canvas muzzles off of each other because they were a slide on and off muzzle, while the plastic ones came with a fastening component and were harder for a lamb to get on and off.
Muzzles allow for water to go through, but not food. For this reason, when it is time to feed your lamb at a show you will want to watch them eat until all the food is gone and then re muzzle to prevent them from eating shavings.
